Is anyone volunteering?

I'd like to head back down from houston to help with the relief effort, but I'm not sure where exactly to go. The red cross has a station in Baton Rouge, does anyone know of any other places in need of volunteers?

We were a little short earlier in Monroe, but everythings kosher now, I stopped by the Civic Center in Monroe yesterday evening where the Red Cross is set up and everything is running very smoothly for now. I'll try and get in touch with my cousin who works for the Red Cross here and find out some type of contact info. for you or if he can give a heads up. If I find out something I'll let you know, but Houston seems a good place to start.

I'm volunteering in New Iberia; we have 117 evacuees from Nola in our little Community Center bldg, and patients were transported to our 2 hospitals and 10 nursing homes.

The Lafayette Cajun Dome needs volunteers as well, and from what I hear they're at full capacity...

i would love to volunteer, but i have no money saved up to pay rent while i'm gone, or bills. i wouldn't have a job to come back to, or a house, if i leave.

despite all of that i've still been considering it. i was planning on moving back in a year or so anyway, so what better way than to help in the rebuilding process.

Shreveport Needs Help

Shreveport is in desperate need of help. We have 3 shelters so far and a huge shortage of people...so if anyone can head this way, we need the help. So.. if you come this way.. bring wheelchairs. We need wheelchairs badly. Almost all of the shelters have at LEAST 1000 people from what I understand.

Subject: Volunteers needed today in hurricane relief effort at PMAC
Importance: High

Friends:

I received a call this morning…Volunteers are needed at the Pete Marivich Assembly Center at LSU to assist with hurricane relief efforts. 4-hour shifts are preferred; please bring clothing and food if you are able. For more information (if the phone line is operable), you may call Kelly Pepper at 803-2084…better yet, please show up at the PMAC to find out where you are most needed. Thank you for any time you can spare.

P.S. Please help us spread the word by forwarding this request to your address books.

even if you can't work on a large-scale relief effort, i say just try to do as many little things as possible. for instance, at the house where coop and i are staying, i have been cleaning up the kitchen, walking the dog, etc, just trying to make things as easy as possible for the kind people who are putting us up.

on that note, i did hear that the place where they're housing animals here in lafayette could use volunteers, i think coopers mom signed me up?

I'd really like to get down to the city and into those boats. I've called and given my information, but I'm waiting for a call back. I suppose I could do some things around here in Baton Rouge until then.

been working off an on at FEMA Special Needs center at LSU in, apparently the "deaf dome." Never bothered to get the real name. There's a flood of nursing home patients who don't have their med info coming in right about now in all probablilty.

dunno how long it will be operating though.
medical experience is a plus.

I'm going to volunteer at the nursing home I work at.

We admitted 30 residents from a nursing home in NOLA today. They were in BR and transported to us. We are expecting another 10-15 tomorrow.

These poor people are scared and they are so confused. They didn't have baths since Saturday morning and very little to eat or drink, and a shortage of meds.

With such an influx of residents I'm going to volunteer there. Once a sufficent amount of staff is hired to help out, I plan on volunterring for Red Cross.

I've been at the Cajun Dome for the last three days, and I can tell you that the local Red Cross Chapter is the worst clusterfuck I've ever seen. After this is all over, I plan on getting involved and trying to change it. The National Red Cross took over today and they are not much better.

I'm doing my part here in Monroe. I started work again, but every hour I'm not at work I'm at the civic center (or drinking my pain). I would really like to be down in the city working, but it doesn't seem safe.
